How to beat Yellowbrow in Black Myth: Wukong
In Chapter 3 of Black Myth: Wukong, players face off against a powerful monk named Yellowbrow, who serves as the final boss. Unlike the previous enemies, Yellowbrow does not transform into a beast, yet he presents a formidable challenge through multiple phases of combat. This guide will provide essential strategies to help you defeat Yellowbrow effectively.
Preparing for Yellowbrow
Yellowbrow awaits you in the New Thunderclap Temple, specifically in Mahavira Hall. Before confronting him, it’s advisable to explore the temple grounds, which are quite expansive. There’s an optional boss named Non-Pure to the right of the hall, and defeating him, along with other optional challenges, can yield valuable XP and Sparks that will assist you in the upcoming battle.
Yellowbrow utilizes lightning-based attacks that can inflict the Shock status, so it’s crucial to carry Shock-Quelling Powder and enhance your shock resistance through armor or by trading in Mind Cores with the Xu Dog from Chapter 2. Additionally, equipping Cloud Step instead of Rock Solid is recommended, reallocating Spark points to boost critical hit damage while using this spell.
The fight consists of several phases, but the good news is that they are checkpointed. Therefore, if you die, you won’t have to restart the entire battle.
How to Beat Yellowbrow (First Encounter)
The initial phase is the easiest. Despite his large size, Yellowbrow moves slowly and attacks using his sceptre with wide swings or slams. These attacks may be slow, making them easier to dodge, but they also carry lightning energy, risking Shock status if you get hit.
To expedite this phase, utilize your resources early. Use Immobilize when he is mid-attack, apply Wandering Wight’s spirit attack to stun him, and activate Wind Tamer vessel to temporarily boost your defense. For uncertain timing with his charged attacks, Cloud Step can help you dodge and set up a critical counter.
Focus on executing full combos and heavy attacks, which can interrupt his attacks, allowing for more damage. He might teleport away, but he often just taunts, giving you the opportunity to rush in and attack.
Once he reaches a third of his health, Yellowbrow becomes more aggressive, using lightning AOE attacks and sending trails of lightning towards you. Be sure to evade these attacks. When he telegraphs a powerful lightning strike, rush in for a full light attack combo to stun him out of it.
Completing this phase should be manageable, and after a cutscene, you will have to face Macaque Chief again, this time aided by Zhu Bajie. If defeated, you’ll respawn at the Mahavira Hall shrine without needing to fight Yellowbrow again. After this encounter, you’ll advance to the second and more challenging phase against Yellowbrow.
How to Beat Yellowbrow (Second Encounter)
If you die during this phase, you’ll respawn at a checkpoint in the deeper part of New Thunderclap Temple, but be aware that it is only a spawn point, meaning you won’t have the opportunity to respec abilities or craft new gear or medicines here.
In this phase, Yellowbrow gains a new ability: he can transform into gold, rendering himself invulnerable to your attacks. While he’s in this state, he will charge his sceptre with lightning, delivering powerful strikes and shockwaves.
To deal with his gold form, you need to use charged heavy attacks to knock him out of it. Once he reverts to his normal form, you can unleash a free combo on him.
When he’s down to a third of his health, Yellowbrow will roar, stunning you and plunging his sceptre into the ground, unleashing a damaging lightning attack. This cutscene attack can significantly reduce your health, so be prepared to heal immediately once you’re back in control.
Second Phase
The next segment of the fight resembles the first phase, where he can teleport and continue using his sceptre charged with lightning. He can still turn into gold, meaning you’ll need to knock him out of this state before inflicting damage.
As he approaches the last third of his health bar, another roaring shockwave will occur, followed by a cutscene that inflicts considerable damage. Again, it’s wise to heal immediately to prepare for the final phase of this intense battle.
Third Phase
This final phase mirrors the earlier encounters, with Yellowbrow capable of charging up massive lightning blasts while in both his normal and gold forms. Ideally, you should have retained some abilities for this part of the fight. If you’ve equipped Wandering Wight’s spirit, its transformation attack can knock him out of gold form. Alternatively, using Wind Tamer can bolster your defense, or transforming into yaoguai can absorb some of his attacks.
Continue to dodge his lightning-based assaults, utilizing Shock-Quelling Powder if you’re affected by Shock status. Look for openings to exploit, using spells like Immobilize and Cloud Step to maximize your damage output until Yellowbrow’s health is depleted.
