How to beat Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang in Black Myth: Wukong

The world of Black Myth: Wukong is filled with various creatures, many of whom are ready to engage in fierce battles. In Chapter 1, you will encounter the boss Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang in the Bamboo Grove area, hidden away in a secluded part of the map. Defeating this Yaoguai Chief is not required to complete the main story, but it marks the first of six frog Yaoguais you need to track down throughout the game. Conquering them all will not only earn you an achievement but will also allow you to upgrade your Spirit summon of Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang to its maximum potential. This guide will provide essential details and tips on how to defeat Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang in Black Myth: Wukong.

Preparing for Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang

Before engaging in battle with the giant frog Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang, it’s crucial to reach the Snake Trail shrine located in the Bamboo Grove area. Once you arrive, ascend the stairs to the right of the shrine. At the top, turn right to encounter the Blessed Gourd Master, who will upgrade your gourd, allowing you to absorb Spirits for use in combat. Make sure to visit him before proceeding.

Next, cross the bridge and approach a bamboo fence. Destroying this barrier grants access to a creek. Venture down and head to the right side, where you’ll find several frog enemies. It’s advisable to eliminate these foes before attracting the boss’s attention to avoid being overwhelmed. Once you’re prepared, continue onward until you spot Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang in a cave.

Compared to other bosses, Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang is relatively easy, but he still delivers powerful attacks. To enhance your chances of survival, consider spending a few Sparks to increase your Health and leveling up your staff stance. Mastering the dodge is essential in this fight; time your dodges carefully to evade Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang’s attacks and create openings for counter-attacks.

Additionally, it’s beneficial to craft the armor available at the shrines. Though it’s early-game armor, it boosts your overall defense, which is crucial for facing Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang. For a significant advantage, unlocking the Guangzhi transformation spell prior to this fight is highly recommended. This spell allows you to inflict fire damage on the boss, exploiting his weakness to fire for an easier battle.

Strategies to Defeat Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang

While Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang is not overly challenging, his large size and ability to close gaps can make avoiding his attacks tricky. Focus on dodge mechanics and utilize the Immobilize ability to create opportunities to strike.

At the start of the fight, and whenever you try to distance yourself, Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang will attempt to jump towards you. Although this attack is easy to dodge, be aware that he can reach you even when you’re trying to heal. When in close range, Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang may execute a frontal sweep attack, which can be a single move or a sequence of two, followed by a double-arm smash. Evade to the sides to avoid his lengthy arms, and after a single sweep, you’ll have a window to land a few hits.

The most challenging attack to avoid is the Back Leg attack. Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang will feign a jump away, only to strike with his rear legs. This attack can be difficult to time, making it an ideal moment to use Immobilize.

When appropriate, activate the Guangzhi transformation. It’s best to hold off on using it until your health is low and you can no longer heal. This form is particularly effective against Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang, as he suffers significant damage from fire-based attacks. Aim to inflict burn status, which adds damage over time and continues to chip away at the boss’s health even when you’re at a distance.

Rewards for Defeating Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang

Conquering Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang allows you to gain valuable experience before facing tougher bosses in Chapter 1, such as the Whiteclad Noble. The rewards for defeating this boss include:

  • 482 XP
  • 384 Will
  • 1x Stone Spirit
  • 1x Tadpole

The most significant reward for defeating Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang is obtaining his Spirit Summon. This summon performs a frontal sweep attack with its tongue, which is highly effective against groups of enemies. Like other spirit abilities, using it requires accumulating Qi.

You can also utilize the Tadpole to upgrade your Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang Spirit. However, be cautious—additional Tadpoles can only be acquired by defeating other frog Yaoguai bosses, with one available in each chapter. Keep an eye out for them to maximize your Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang Spirit’s potential as you progress through the game.

Now, prepare yourself to face the next formidable boss in Black Myth: Wukong, Guangmou.
