Celestial dragons in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

The celestial dragons are a distinctive type of adversary found in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Unlike most enemies you encounter in the main storyline, these dragons are not encountered in standard combat. Instead, they emerge during specific optional quests and companion missions that players can choose to pursue.

Defeating these celestial dragons rewards you with a considerable amount of experience points, valuable crafting materials, and unique items, including treasure chests that provide significant loot.

Furthermore, defeating all five celestial dragons grants a special achievement or trophy, making them a rewarding challenge for committed players. This guide will outline where to locate these formidable foes and how to effectively defeat them.

Where to Find the Celestial Dragons

You can encounter the five celestial dragons at the end of the following quests:

  • The Summit of Their Kind – The Formless.
  • The Heart of Corruption – Returned Dragon.
  • Take Down the Scorching Fang – Scorching Fang.
  • Kataranda the Stormrider – Kataranda.
  • Lair of the Dragon King – Kaltenzahn.

How to Defeat the Celestial Dragons

Generally, all celestial dragons exhibit similar behaviors. They will attempt to attack you in various ways, such as through biting or tail sweeping depending on your positioning. Additionally, they can scratch you with their claws if you are too close. These dragons also have the capability to take flight and perform area attacks that cover a wide range, as well as shoot horizontal lightning bolts and fire projectiles. Some possess special effects that can darken the area, complicating battles.

Moreover, except for one, all celestial dragons will retreat after sustaining a certain amount of damage. During their retreat, you cannot attack them and must dodge their ranged attacks until they return to the ground. Typically, the best strategy is to stay close to their legs. While their claw attacks are unblockable, they are relatively simple to evade. Once you fill their stun bar completely, they will topple over, allowing you to strike their chest, which is their weak point.
