Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth “underperforming”, says industry analyst
Recent reports indicate that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is experiencing lower sales than its predecessor, Final Fantasy 7 Remake. According to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, the game has sold approximately half of what Remake achieved within the same timeframe, suggesting it is “underperforming sales-wise.”
Ahmad’s statements were made via social media, where he explained that the sales figures are based on data from equities research reports, which utilize standard sales tracking methods. He noted that Rebirth is projected to have a weaker sales trajectory compared to Remake.
Many fans have pointed out that comparing the two releases may not be entirely fair. The Final Fantasy 7 Remake launched in April 2020, a time when global lockdowns were in effect due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This context could have significantly boosted its sales, as many consumers sought entertainment during those challenging times. Additionally, Remake was released at the end of the PS4’s lifecycle, while Rebirth is currently only available on the PS5, potentially limiting its audience.
Moreover, it’s plausible that while the Remake drew in many players, not all enjoyed the reimagined experience, which might have influenced their decision not to purchase Rebirth.
Released to critical acclaim, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has received positive reviews, with some critics describing it as an “overstuffed but lovable re-imagining” of the original game. However, a notable issue arose shortly after the 1.020 patch was implemented at the end of March. Players who purchased the digital version encountered a bug that prevented them from achieving the platinum trophy due to a flaw in a specific side quest. This issue has since been addressed in the subsequent 1.030 patch.
In light of these developments, the ongoing conversation around Rebirth’s sales performance continues, with fans and analysts alike speculating on the factors influencing its market reception.
