Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu likely won’t compose a full game score again

Legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu, known for his iconic work on the Final Fantasy series, has indicated that he is unlikely to compose a full game score again. In a recent interview, Uematsu reflected on his future in video game music, particularly regarding the beloved franchise that has shaped his career.

During the conversation with a German publication, Uematsu discussed his continuing involvement with Final Fantasy, stating, “As far as Final Fantasy is concerned, I’m still involved by writing the main themes for the games.” However, he expressed doubt about returning to the extensive task of creating an entire game’s soundtrack, saying, “But I don’t think I’ll compose music for a whole game again.”

Uematsu elaborated on the challenges of composing a full score, citing the intense commitment required: “You would have to give it full throttle for two or three years. And I don’t think I have the physical and mental strength to do it anymore.” This statement highlights the toll such a demanding creative process can take on composers.

Instead, Uematsu expressed a desire to focus on other projects that inspire him, including his orchestral piece, Merregnon: Heart of Ice, and his band, Uematsu Nobuo conTIKI. His passion for music remains strong, as he seeks to invest his energy into works that bring him joy.

Most recently, Uematsu composed the main theme for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which is set to release shortly. However, the complete score for the game comes from a diverse group of composers, marking a shift in Uematsu’s role within the franchise he once dominated.

Historically, Uematsu was the sole composer for the first nine titles in the Final Fantasy series, crafting unforgettable melodies that defined the games. In more recent years, his contributions have evolved, as he has collaborated with other artists on various spin-offs and projects.

The last complete score attributed to Uematsu was for Fantasian, an Apple Arcade exclusive mobile RPG created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the visionary behind the Final Fantasy series. In a past interview, Sakaguchi mentioned that Uematsu’s work on Fantasian might be his final extensive soundtrack, due to the health challenges he has faced.

Uematsu’s legacy as a composer is marked by his unique ability to evoke deep emotions through music, a skill that has left an indelible mark on the gaming world. As he transitions to new projects, fans will undoubtedly continue to cherish the timeless scores that have become synonymous with the Final Fantasy brand.
