For the third year running, Pokémon Go is unofficially celebrating 4/20

For the third consecutive year, Pokémon Go is playfully acknowledging the occasion of 4/20. This time around, the excitement centers on the Grass-type Pokémon, Bellsprout, which will feature prominently in this month’s Community Day on April 20th. Bellsprout will also be gaining a new move, Magical Leaf, adding a delightful twist for players.

Niantic, the developers behind Pokémon Go, have a history of incorporating cheeky references to the date in their game. In 2023, the in-game event titled Grass and Gratitude allowed players to encounter the Mythical Grass-type Pokémon, Shaymin. Similarly, in 2022, Pokémon Go celebrated Sustainability Week on April 20th, introducing the Shiny version of Cherubi, whose Pokédex number is humorously #420.

Earlier this month, discussions with Niantic revealed the developers’ perspective on the future of Pokémon Go as it approaches its 10th anniversary. While some players have expressed concerns about the game losing its charm and analysts have suggested a decline in revenue, Niantic remains optimistic, asserting that Pokémon Go is thriving and continues to grow.
