How to play Online with friends in The Binding of Isaac Rebirth

Fans of The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth can finally celebrate, as Edmund McMillen has introduced the DLC Repentance+. This exciting update enables players to engage in online gameplay with friends or even new acquaintances. However, there are certain prerequisites you need to meet to join in on the action.

Requirements for Online Play in The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Initially, many players thought the online feature would be an update to the existing game. Instead, the developer has rolled out a separate free DLC that players must add to their library.

To access the online mode, players must possess all previous DLCs, specifically Repentance, Afterbirth, and Afterbirth+. If you only have the base game or are missing any expansions, you won’t be able to play online.

How the Online Feature Works

The store page where you can redeem the DLC clearly states that having all prior expansions is necessary to access online play. This unexpected requirement left many players questioning whether this mode would eventually be integrated into the base game or if they would need to purchase additional expansions.

Playing with Friends in The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Joining friends for online play is quite simple. First, ensure you download the DLC Repentance+ and confirm that it’s added to your library. Remember to fully close Steam before reopening it, enabling the game to update automatically.

After the game has updated, launch it as usual. You’ll see a new loading screen where you’ll need to accept specific terms and conditions regarding online gameplay. Once accepted, a new option labeled “Online” will appear in the main menu.

Available Online Play Modes

The online mode offers four different gameplay options:

  • Quick Match: Jump in and play without any hassle.
  • Public Match: Join a game with up to three random players.
  • Friends Match: Create a room for your friends to join and vice versa.
  • Daily Run: This feature was present in the base game but has now been moved.

Additional Information

It’s worth mentioning that this DLC is currently only available in English, and players will not have access to mods until the creators update their versions. Edmund McMillen has referred to this DLC as a “beta,” which implies that updates and enhancements will be forthcoming.
