Path of Exile 2: How to Ascend a Class and Get Ancestry Points

In Path of Exile 2, each character class has the chance to ascend, enabling players to focus on a particular archetype and gain access to distinct features and passive abilities. This guide will outline the necessary steps and requirements for ascending your class, so let’s explore the process.

Ascending a Class: Requirements and Challenges

Every character class in the game provides up to three different ascensions, although only two are currently accessible during the early access phase. To unlock these ascensions, players must complete specific challenges that test their skills against various monsters and bosses.

At present, there are two main trials available for ascension:

  • Trial of Sekhem: Located in Act 2, access requires the Barya of Balbala, which you can obtain by defeating the boss Balbala in The Traitor’s Passage area.
  • Temple of Chaos: This trial is found in Act 3 and necessitates the Ultimatum item, which is acquired by defeating the boss Xyclucian in the Chimeral Wetlands.

To initiate these trials, you must progress to a certain point in the campaign that grants entry to their respective zones. Additionally, you’ll need to use a token or entry coin at the relic altar to start the trial.

Once you commence a trial, you’ll encounter various randomly generated challenges each time, such as disarming crystals within a time limit or defeating a boss. After completing each room, you will have the chance to select your next challenge from multiple options.

It’s important to understand that the initial token you receive for a trial can be utilized repeatedly, regardless of whether you die during the challenge. However, if you perish in subsequent trials, you will lose your tokens and need to earn them afresh. You can also fail a trial if your honor meter reaches zero, which occurs when you sustain damage. Be mindful, as this meter is only present in the first trial.

Successfully completing the ascension trial allows you to choose a new ascension class for your character at the ascension altar. Keep in mind that this choice is final, so consider your options carefully before making a decision.

How to Acquire Ancestry Points

Upon unlocking your first ascension in Path of Exile 2, you will receive two ancestry points to allocate towards the unique passives of your selected specialization. But how can you obtain additional ancestry points? Unlike regular points gained through leveling, these points are acquired differently.

You can earn an extra two ancestry points by successfully completing the second ascension trial with your character. Additionally, you have the option to replay these ascension trials at a higher difficulty level. For example, during the early access phase, if you complete the trials again at the Cruel difficulty, you will be rewarded with extra ancestry points.
